A Peek into My World.

Today I thought I'd give all a little glimpse into my day to day life, by giving you a tour (a very short tour!) of my office space at home.

This is where I spend my days when I'm not out shooting, editing weddings, responding to enquiries and just generally working on my business. I'm quite lucky that we have a spare room, that was being used for nothing but junk before I decided to take over it.

As you can see it is very white! I decided that I wanted it that way in order to bring some colour in with accessories. That way it wasn't stuck to a particular colour scheme and I could change as and when I wanted to.

You may notice that I'm working just from a Macbook Pro! It's connected to a few hard-drives which you can't see but I hope at the start of next year to upgrade to a iMac, with a bigger screen for editing. The Macbook has served me very well though.

I made these memo boards myself from cork tiles, fabric and two large ikea frames after searching everywhere for something similar! I just didn't like the idea of a regular old ugly corkboard on my wall. I use them for collecting pose inspiration from magazines and catalogues and pinning up the cards I receive from all my lovely clients. One also holds an envelope containing my 101 in 1001 list, so its always there in front of me to keep me motivated!

My shelves house some of my photo-booth props, and a couple of sample products and ornaments that I use when visiting clients or exhibiting at fairs. At the moment I also have a jar with two roses and a gorgeous peony from Claire at Lily and May, from our styled shoot at the start of the week! They are certainly filling the air with a lovely scent.

Hope you enjoyed a little peek into my office space!

One Frame Friday: 16.03.12

My zebra finches are expecting again... there are two tiny baby finches in their nest (and two more eggs!) so in a few weeks its going to get noisy in my living room as the babies start to scream for food until they are able to fly the nest themselves. I'm actually quite excited to see how this nest turn out seeing as their parents are both pure white.

I broke my own rules with this picture this week. I intended this project to be black and white only, but I just couldn't convert this one. I tried, tweaked and adjusted, but it just didn't have the same charm in black and white. Plus these little birds have gorgeous bright orange beaks, I didn't want to hide that!

If anyone would like to rescue their babies from a new home at the pet shop, get in touch they are free to a good home and once they're a bit bigger I can let you know if I have male or females.

One Frame Friday: 02.03.12

Yesterday I met up with a group of local photographers, to chat shop and practice on each other. It was something I was so glad I did as sometimes working for yourself can mean you work from home and barely see or speak to people for days. It was just nice to stroll along the waterside in Ipswich with the sun on our faces and speak about photography and the business of photography.

Being in front of the camera is always a strange thing for photographers, but we all offered to pose for each other in order to feel what its like to be a client and of course come home with pictures to update our profiles!

It's always so interesting to see how other people shoot, and how differently others see things from you.

I want to do more of this, not only to make some brilliant friends, but also so I come away as refreshed and inspired as I did yesterday.

So my Facebook news feed went crazy with proposal stories this week, which can only mean one thing. Valentines Day! My boyfriend and I don't celebrate this... so I thought I'd get a little bit in the spirit if only for this weeks blog post.

I'm exhibiting at yet another wedding fair this weekend, and I'm hoping since many of you are newly engaged love will be in the air! Come and see me on sunday at the Ultimate Wedding Fair in Ipswich 11-4pm. It's free entry so there really is no excuse!

#42 - See A Musical

This cryptic clue was my Christmas present from Russell. I was immediately worried that he was planning to buy me a hotel on Leicester Square and the commute to work at my new job would be horrendous! But..... after further inspection (and help from my brother) it was in actual fact tickets to see Wicked and a hotel stay in London. I've never been great with putting things together!

I'd never seen a proper musical at the theatre before and so was beyond excited, plus I discovered we'd got an amazing 4* hotel with a view of St Pauls Cathedral to stay in. Here is the obligatory photo in a mirror to remember things by.

You'll have to excuse my really bad iPhone pictures below of the theatre and the stage as I didn't lug my camera out but once again, I just wanted something to remember it by!

The next day we had a lazy stroll around Spitalfields Market, and spend ages laughing at this street performer who kept making all the passers by jump out of their skin!

Here was one last reminder of the weekend (with St Pauls in the background of course!)

I've now ticked my first personal goal off my 101 in 1001 list! Thanks Russell! xx

One Frame Friday: 10.02.12

Here is my obligatory picture of the snow.

It's starting to drive me crazy... Although I am excited to photograph a wedding in this tomorrow, as long as we get no more settling. I really hope the bride and groom are as excited and willing to stand out in it for a few shots!

In fact it led me to searching online for snowy inspiration and I've come across these amazing wintery weddings from across the pond:

Whist thinking about all of this I was also taken back to my cruise ship days, one of my colleagues was so lucky to be flown by helicopter to photograph a wedding on an Alaskan Glacier. We were all jealous! Anyone planning a wedding like that? I'm your girl if so! :)

One Frame Friday - 03.02.12

Wow, how is it February already and when will I learn to spell February without spell checking it?!

Today's picture is about a very exciting delivery I received. My sample albums! I'll be photographing these very soon to show you all. But if you want to see them sooner you can always come and visit me at another wedding fair this weekend.

I'll be exhibiting at the Ivy House Wedding and Beauty show in Chelmsford this Sunday from 11am - 3.30pm. So come along and keep me company for a bit. I can talk about weddings for hours. Seriously.

Have a great weekend!!

One Frame Friday - 27.01.12

I have been making up a ton of origami birds in preparation for this sunday's wedding fair at Mulberry House, I think I could probably make them in my sleep now!

If you're on the hunt for some wedding inspiration this weekend then make sure you come along and say hello, I'll be there from 11am - 3pm and I'm even running a very exciting competition for all you bride and grooms to be. (Plus I have sweets!)

You can find out all about the wedding fair here, I look forward to meeting some of you and showing you some pictures of my stand next week.

Have a great weekend :) x

One Frame Friday - 13.01.12

I needed a project this year to push my creative side. I've often joked with family that I'm a rubbish photographer because outside of actual real jobs, I rarely have my camera on me. So in light of this I've decided a little project to force me to take my camera everywhere is the solution.

To keep it simple I've opted to post a picture every friday on my blog, just one simple picture of my everyday life. I've also decided that this photo is to be a black and white frame each week. The reasoning behind that is because I love colour, I look for colour in every shoot I do and I get really excited by it. However going back to pushing my creativity I needed a challenge and for me that is shooting and seeing in black and white.

So to kick of the first week of One Frame Friday, I have this picture of my lovely friend Kerry O'Brine modelling her Midnight coat. We've vowed to meet up every month to keep each other in check and on track with our businesses and this was our first meeting of 2012.

#15 - Exhibit At A Local Event - Complete!

I started a list of 101 things I'd like to achieve in 1001 days recently and I'm very happy to announce that I've finally crossed my first goal off the list!

Number 15 was 'Exhibit at a local event' and lucky for me I managed to get myself a spot at Colchester Free Festival this past weekend. I set up my stand in the Kidstival section and opted to give away free photos in my photo booth. All the participants simply had to do was supply me with an email address and their pictures were promptly emailed on Monday morning.

I have to admit we were much busier than I thought we would be. I had had visions of us standing in an empty gazebo all day counting down the time but luckily that wasn't the case. We were busy for most of the day and lots of people found the concept of receiving free photos hard to believe. 'Whats the catch?' was the most often used phrase. Not really sure what they were expecting at a FREE festival!

This is how we set up on the day. big thanks to my mum and sister in law for my bunting! The TV on the end of the table on the left displayed the pictures as they were taken and then was set to slideshow through all the images when the photo booth was free to new participants.

This was the prop table, which was hard to keep looking tidy! The props in the jars on the left are the ones responsible for making the tip of my finger numb whilst making them. I made glasses, hats, crowns, moustaches and various other silly things! As well as this we had lots of children's dressing up costumes, feather boa's, chalkboards and wigs. (My finger is still numb by the way!)

I also decided to run a offer on the day and thought it was a good opportunity to display some of my previous work. Being in the Kidstival section I decided that targeting the family market was the best idea and so I displayed a canvas, a photo book of the Costanzo's photo shoot and some business cards. I'm happy to say that I received a lot of good feedback regarding my work and even booked a few family photo shoots of the back of it.

I'm fortunate to have a family that I can talk into doing things with me! My little brother and my sister in law were my helpers for the day and did a great job of reeling in new customers in silly costumes.

Of course I and the family couldn't escape from the photo booth (even Rodney got in on the action!) below are some photos of us all.

On Friday I'm blogging 20 of my favourite pictures from the day, we had some great kids and families take part and I can't wait to show you some of the best!

Happy Birthday Mum!

Today is my mum's birthday and I'm out shooting a wedding! Eeek! So to combat my guilt at missing the celebrations (which I have managed to convince her, would be best on a Friday anyway) I thought a dedicated blog post may suffice!!

These pictures were taken a couple of weeks back when I joined my mum, brother and his friend for a picnic in the woods.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MUM! xx

No Such Thing As Can't

Back in 2009 I worked for six months on a cruise ship that went back and forth through Alaska and then down to the Carribbean. It was both the hardest and best job I've ever had but I am now glad it's in the past! This is mainly because it was horrible when you made friends on the ship only for them to leave and go home and become replaced with someone else. Even worse was the thought of not knowing if you'd ever see these people ever again. Most of the friends I made aboard the Island Princess live in completely different countries and it's really sad knowing we'll never all be together in the same room ever again.

I was going through my photos the other day to make sure I had things organised and backed up and found one of my friend Hannes on what was a pretty poignant day for me. He had become such a close friend in the three months I had known him on the ship and his contract along with another photographer Tim, was coming to an end. I remember us all saying that we couldn't complete out contracts without them, it wouldn't be the same, we'd be counting the days until we left.... there was even a tear-jearking video made for their send off! (which I'd like to have linked to also, but it's a bit rude in places!)

With some rare time off in Ketchikan Alaska, Hannes and I headed out for a walk and he told me there was something he'd like to show me that he'd seen whilst out on a run when he was in port another time. He proceeded to walk up the steepest hill I had ever seen in my life, I wish I'd taken a picture. It was a really picturesque place with wooden houses on stilts all the way up. I moaned though (of course!) that there was no way I could make it all the way up, it can't be possible to walk up there!

Then when we got there he showed me this saying inscribed into the wall at the top of the hill outside somebody's house. 'No Such Thing As Can't' and I just had to laugh. At the time it made me realise that of course I'd complete my contract with Princess Cruises and obviously I could walk up a hill. It's just a matter of keeping ahold of that positive attitude.

Recently I've been beating myself up about things not happening as quickly or exactly as I'd like, comparing my work to others and feeling really demotivated by lack of success where others seem to be blossoming. When I'm having these real 'pity party' days I like to think of Hannes and his optimism and the way he sees the world

Today when I came across this photo it made me smile, because when I finally left the ship I was so worried about what I'd do for a job afterwards. The year following my disembark I tried to set up a photography business and really wasn't getting there so I resided to the fact that I couldn't do it well enough to make it my full time career. I got a job elsewhere and put the idea to the back of my mind.

Now however I realise that there really is no such thing as can't and the work I put in back then has helped build my portfolio up to where I am now. Without even realising it I was working towards where I wanted to be. Where I am now is happily growing my new business, albeit slowly but I know that this time next year things will be even better.

I should mention that Hannes is an amazing fashion photographer and you should shimmy on over to here and see his work. Also the pictures of the two of us were taken by my friend Katie who is my double living in America. As soon as I can afford to I'm off to South Africa to see Hannes again and walk up some more hills.

My Week(s) In Pictures...

I've fallen slightly behind on posting this project! But I have kept up by taking a picture a day, so here in one massive post is my last 8 weeks (eek!) in pictures. It's a looooong post.

As for what I've been up to in that time where do I start? I've been to and returned from a weeks holiday in Morocco, been on a course with the Princes Trust who are helping me getting my business up and running, attempted and failed to do some face to face market research, received the news of my friend being pregnant!, second shot my first wedding of the year, and celebrated the royal wedding.....
